Grammar

 

Rhetorical question leaded by “不是   bú shi  ”.

 

不是告诉你今天不上班了吗?

búshi gàosu nĭ jīntiān búshàngbān lema ?

Didn’t I tell you not to come to work today?

 

今天不是星期六吗?

jīntiān búshi xīngqīliù ma ?

Isn’t Saturday today?

 

 

才  

cái   

indicates the lateness of the action.

 

我今天10点才起床。

wŏ jīntiān shídiăn cáiqĭchuáng 。

I got up at ten o’clock this morning.

 

你怎么现在才来啊?

nĭ zĕnme xiànzài cáilái a ?

Why are here now?

 

 

verb/adjective+得   

de  

is known as degree complement. It modifies the degree of expression of the adjective or verb.

 

我吃得太多了。

wŏ chīde tàiduō le 。

I ate too much.

 

昨天晚上我睡得不好。

zuótiān wănshang wŏshuìde bùhăo 。

I didn’t sleep well last night.

 

 

verb+着  

zhe  is similar to the use of _ing in English.

Also when you are talking about “states”, 着  zhe   it is still needed.

 

我们吃着火锅唱着歌。

wŏmen chīzhe huŏguō chàngzhegē 。

We are having hot pot and we are singing a song.

 

我的桌子上放着一本书。

wŏde zhuōzishàng fàngzhe yìbĕnshū 。

There is a book on my desk.
