Grammar

 

rhetorical question is not a real question. It is a type of expression which puts and emphasizes the answers in a question.

 

海胆还有吃不完的啊?(海胆应该是能吃完的。)

hăidăn háiyŏu chībùwánde a ?( hăidăn yīnggāi shì néngchīwán de 。)

How come you didn’t finish the sea urchins? ( you can finish eating all the sea urchins.)

 

中国人还不会说普通话吗?(中国人都应该会说普通话。)

zhōngguórén hái búhuìshuō pŭtōnghuà ma ?( zhōngguórén dōuyīnggāi huìshuō pŭtōnghuà 。)

Chinese can speak Mandarin, can’t they? ( all Chinese should be able to speak Mandarin )

 

 

Pronoun+亲自  

qīn zì  +verb,

doing something by oneself or in person.

 

我妈妈亲自下厨,今天大家有口福了。

wŏ māma qīnzì xiàchú , jīntiān dàjiā yŏukŏufú le 。

Everyone will have a great feast today, since my mother will cook in person.

 

老板亲自去做这件案子。

lăobăn qīnzì qù zuò zhèjiàn ànzi 。

The boss will solve the case in person.

 

 

才  

cái  

can be used to emphasize that only one course of action will bring about the desired outcome.

 

好东西大家一起尝,才有味道。

hăodōngxi dàjiā yìqĭcháng , cáiyŏu wèidao 。

It’ll be tasty if we shares the food together.

 

努力学习,才能考得好。

nŭlì xuéxí , cáinéng kăodehăo 。

Study hard and you will get good grades.

 

刚   

gāng  

expresses an action that happened not long ago or for events that happened in the immediate past, in English we use the word "just."

 

我的女儿刚起床。

wŏde nǚér gāngqĭchuáng 。

My daughter just left.

 

他们刚走。

tāmen gāngzŏu 。

They just left.

 

比起   

bĭ qĭ  

is a verb, which means “ to compare with”. 比起  bĭ qĭ   can be used at the beginning of a sentence, which is different from 比  bĭ.

 

比起姐姐,我的学习差很多。

bĭqĭ jiĕjie , wŏde xuéxí chāhĕnduō 。

My work is much worse than my sister’s.

 

比起夏天,我更喜欢春天。

bĭqĭ xiàtiān , wŏ gèngxĭhuan chūntiān 。

I prefer spring to summer.

 

 

Using 反正   

fǎn zhèng 

can be a bit addictive as it is seemingly possible to throw in everywhere. It means "anyhow," or "regardless", and is used to disregard a previous statement, particularly those involve options or choices.

 

你们怎么想没关系,反正我会跟他走。

nĭmen zĕnmexiăng méiguānxi , fănzhèng wŏhuì gēntāzŏu 。

I will go with him no matter what you think.

 

你喜不喜欢都一样,反正已经决定了。

nĭ xĭbùxĭhuan dōuyíyàng , fănzhèng yĭjīng juédìngle 。

I have made a decison no matter you like it or not.

 

 

瞧得上  

qiáo de shàng   

is the spoken version of 看得起   kàn de shàng, it means thinking highly of something or somebody. The negative form is “瞧不上  qiáo bu shàng”。

 

我没有钱,美女怎么会瞧得上我?

wŏ méiyŏu qián , mĕinǚ zĕnme huì qiáodeshàng wŏ ?

How will the pretty woman fancy me without having any money?

 

这个挑剔的女人瞧不上廉价的衣服。

zhè ge tiāotide nǚren qiáobushàng liánjiàde yīfu 。

The picky woman doesn’t fancy the cheap clothes.

 

 

Common saying and Idiom

美味当前百忧解  

mĕiwèidāngqián băiyōujiĕ  

means all the trouble will disappear when having delicious food.

法眼  

fă yăn  

is originally a word for Buddhism term, which describe those people with the eyes having the ability to observe the truth.

锦上添花  

jĭnshàngtiānhuā  

This idiom means placing embroidery upon silk. It describe that decoration makes the beautiful things more beautiful.


闺蜜  

guī mì  

Bestie. 闺 means the bedroom of an ancient lady. 蜜 is 密 means close friend. Bestie is a kind of title to call a close female friend. And bromeo also derives from it.
