Grammar

既       

jì    

can be used in conjunction with either 又   yòu  or 也   yě    to express that something is "both A and B":

 

在中国的南方既有迷人的风景,又有美味的当地菜。

zài zhōng guó de nán fāng jì yŏu mí rén de fēng jĭng , yòu yŏu mĕi wèi de dāng dì cài 。

There is both stunning scenery and delicious local dishes in the south of China.

 

这里的人既勤劳,又美丽。

zhè lĭ de rén jì qín láo , yòu mĕi lì 。

The people here are both hardworking and beautiful.

不是……而是……                    

bú shì... ér shì            

means "not A, but rather B." This is a useful phrase to use in arguments to overturn a point of view and state the opposite.

 

好的作品不是说出来的,而是做出来的。

hăo de zuò pĭn bú shì shuō chu lái de , ér shì zuò chu lái de 。

Good work is not done by saying but doing.

 

不是不能去这个地方,而是现在去太冷,等到五月去最好。

bú shì bù néng qù zhè ge dì fang , ér shì xiàn zài qù tài lĕng , dĕng dào wŭ yuè qù zuì hăo 。

It’s not saying that we cannot go there, just it’s too cold at this moment, we’d better go there in May.

 

随着            

suí zhe            

means "along with," "in the wake of" or "following."

 

随着中国经济的发展,人民的生活也越来越富裕。

suí zhe zhōng guó jīng jì de fā zhăn , rén mín de shēng huó yĕ yuè lái yuè fù yù 。

Along with the development of Chinese economy, people's life is becoming better and better.

 

随着警察对案件的调查,真相也慢慢地浮出水面。

suí zhe jĭng chá duì àn jiàn de diào chá , zhēn xiàng yĕ màn màn de fú chū shuĭ miàn 。

As the investigation goes, the truth rises to the surface little by little.

 

如果.....那么....              

rú guŏ ..... nà me ....                

expressing “if…, then….”.

 

如果你能在考试前好好复习,那么就不用担心考试成绩。

rú guŏ nĭ néng zài kăo shì qián hăo hao fù xí , nà me jiù bú yòng dān xīn kăo shì chéng jì 。

You don’t need to worry about the grades if you can prepare for it well.

 

如果这次比赛输了,那么今年我们将没有机会参加决赛。

rú guŏ zhè cì bĭ sài shū le , nà me jīn nián wŏ men jiāng méi yŏu jī huì cān jiā jué sài 。

We won’t have another opportunity to participate in the finals if we lose this game.

到底              

dào dǐ                

literally means "to the bottom," and often is used where the speaker wants to get to the bottom of a problem or issue, emphasizing or questioning what the real reason for something is.

 

你到底有没有偷东西,快说!

nĭ dào dĭ yŏu méi yŏu tōu dōng xi , kuài shuō !

Have you steal anything on earth, Say it!

 

我们都在一起五年了,你到底要不要跟我结婚?

wŏ men dōu zài yì qĭ wŭ nián le , nĭ dào dĭ yào bú yào gēn wŏ jié hūn ?We have been together for five years now. Do you want to marry me or not?
