The auxiliary verb要+ verb

When要 used before verbs it has the same meaning as “be going to”.

Wǒ zhōumò yào qù dǎqiú.

I am going to play ball on the weekend.

Wǒ míngtiān yào xué zhōngwén.

I will going to learn Chinese tomorrow.

The adverb好+verb

When 好 is used as an adverb, it can be modifying verbs. It means good or easy to do something.

Zhōngguó cài hěn hào chī.

Chinese food is delicious.

Yī bù hǎokàn de zhōngguó diànyǐng.

The modal verb想

想has several meanings. In this lesson, it indicates a desire to do something. It must be followed by a verb or a clause.

Nǐ xiǎng kàn diànyǐng ma?

Do you want to watch a movie?

Wǒ bùxiǎng kàn diànyǐng.

Suggestions with 吧

One of the common usage of 吧 is to make suggestions. 吧 also makes the sentence more tentative and more polite.

Wǒmen qù chànggē ba.

Let's go sing.

Mǎi xiàwǔ de ba.

Let’s buy the afternoon one.

The structure particle的

Before nouns, 的 is used to mark possession or modification. Notice sometimes we will omit the noun, if the noun is motioned in the context.

Yī bù hǎokàn de zhōngguó diànyǐng.

A good Chinese movie.

Xiàwǔ de (diànyǐng) ba!

The one in the afternoon!

Expressing “together” with 一起

一起 is the simple way to express an action being done together by other people. The pronouns (the people who are doing the action together) must be used before 一起。

Wǒ hé wáng lì yīqǐ qù kàn diànyǐng.

I went to the movies with Wang Li.

Wǒ de nán péngyǒu bù hé wǒ yīqǐ xué zhōngwén.

My boyfriend doesn't learn Chinese with me.
