GRAMMAR

 

接下来           jiē xià lai           means “next”, “then”. 

“接下来” Can be used as a conjunction at the beginning of a sentence, also used as an adverb in the middle of the sentence. 

 

Chinese:

我已经买了机票,接下来可以定酒店了。

Chinese Pinyin:

wŏ yĭ jīng măi le jī piào , jiē xià lái kĕ yĭ dìng jiŭ diàn le 。

English Translation:

I've already bought a ticket, and then we can book a hotel.

Chinese:

我们接下来的任务是打开欧洲市场。

Chinese Pinyin:

wŏ men jiē xià lai de rèn wu shì dă kāi ōu zhōu shì chăng 。

English Translation:

Our next task is to open the European market.

通常             tōng cháng              

means “usually” , “normally”.  Although it’s very similar to “平时”  (píng shí), “通常” (tōng cháng)   , it also can be used for a general situation, which “平时”(píng shí) cannot.

 

Chinese:

我通常不穿裙子。

Chinese Pinyin:

wŏ tōng cháng bù chuān qún zi 。

English Translation:

I usually don’t wear dresses.

 

Chinese:

半岁的孩子通常不会走路。

Chinese Pinyin:

bàn suì de hái zi tōng cháng bú huì zŏu lù 。

English Translation:

Six-month-old babies usually can’t walk.

给               gĕi             

has many meanings, here it is used as a preposition in the passive context. It can be omitted, it is often used in a spoken Chinese.

 

Chinese:

你的良心被狗给吃了吗?

Chinese Pinyin:

nĭ de liáng xīn bèi gŏu gĕi chī le ma ?

English Translation:

Have you lost your conscience?

 

Chinese:

她的钱包被她儿子给拿走了。

Chinese Pinyin:

tā de qián bāo bèi tā ér zi gĕi ná zŏu le 。

English Translation:

Her purse has been taken by her son.

其实           qí shí            

is an adverb means “actually”, “in fact” .

 

Chinese:

他其实并不喜欢你。

Chinese Pinyin:

tā qí shí bìng bù xĭ huan nĭ 。

English Translation:

He actually doesn’t like you.

 

Chinese:

中文其实没有那么难。

Chinese Pinyin:

zhōng wén qí shí méi yŏu nà me nán 。

English Translation:

Actually, Chinese is not that hard.
